For Samuel Burlum and Mark Ringen of Extreme Energy Solutions, their mutual interest in preserving the environment, and saving money on fuel, began on local and regional dirt racing tracks.
The two became friends, and were both racing enthusiasts, who were always searching for ways to minimize fuel costs in the racing industry, while getting the most vehicle performance with little or no resources.
They began researching about and experimenting with different options on the track, and desired from there to take their knowledge to the streets.
In the winter of 2008, the duo became involved with a national think tank of investors and green enthusiasts and companies, interested in environmentally-friendly and efficient products, with the purpose of reducing carbon footprints.
From there, Burlum and Ringen essentially became an independent research team with companies enlisting their services to help them find ways to lower emissions, increase fuel efficiency, help engines to perform more effectively and run cleaner, decrease engine wear and tear, and to lower fuel costs.
Since then, Burlum and Ringen have branched out on their own with Extreme Energy Solutions, creating their own standards to help consumer and fleet vehicles to become more environmentally-friendly and fuel efficient, while in the environmental and green industries, creating products with one standard, and policing their industry.
In November of 2009, they began a relationship with InterCharger Energy. That company is currently located in the states of Washington, North Carolina, and Florida.
They have since become the Northeast Regional Authorized InterCharger Distributor and Installer, and are in the process of bringing all of the manufacturing and distribution of the InterCharger product to New Jersey. The device will not only be made in the US, but be considered, “New Jersey Made.”
The InterCharger is a device, which helps fuel to burn more efficiently, and, in turn, fuel emissions are lowered, engine performance is improved, and fuel efficiency is increased. The InterCharger was tested by the California Air Resources Board, which certified it is safe for use on different engines (CARB EO #671).
With fuel costs hovering at close to $4 per gallon for regular gasoline, according to Burlum and Ringen, there is a quick return on investment for those who purchase the InterCharger.
The InterCharger comes in various sizes, to accommodate small gasoline engines including quads, motorcycles, and landscape equipment, and up to Class 6-8 Diesel and Natural Gas 8.6 to 14.9 L Engines.
Extreme Energy Solutions offers free trial programs to municipalities, and fleet vehicles, to test out the InterCharger for a trial period of 90 days, during which time Extreme Energy Solutions works with the companies and municipalities to help them monitor the increase in gas mileage, and decrease in harmful exhausts coming from the vehicles.
After the municipalities and companies have assessed if the InterCharger has worked for them, they can proceed and decide if the InterCharger is the solution for their fleet vehicles, and enter into an affordable lease agreement for the device. Two groups currently involved in InterCharger trial programs are Andover Township, NJ and Utz Snack Foods.
Andover Township reported improvements after 30 days, with an increase in miles per gallon with all vehicles in which the device was installed. An emissions test performed on one of the vehicles shows the vehicle at almost no emissions. Additionally, DPW workers commented they are pleased that they “are no longer breathing in the toxic stink behind these trucks when they are out working behind them, filling potholes.”
Extreme Energy Solutions holds an impressive amount of testimonials praising their InterCharger product.
The company has received the green light from the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, permitting Extreme Energy Solutions to reach out to taxicab owners, and permitting New York City taxis to be equipped with the InterCharger in their engines. The device is the only allowable engine modification by NYC TLC.
Boone County Schools, in Madison, WV, has the InterCharger on five of their school buses. “It has been good for us,” said Steven K. Bradley, Executive Director of Transportation. The group will be pulling data in May to see if the fuel efficiency has remained consistently higher. After that, they may consider the InterCharger for their entire fleet.
Their trial began on one bus over 50 days, and the mileage approximated at 6.45 per gallon prior to the InterCharger, and increased to 7.9 after the second month, with an average of 7.825 miles per gallon. Over the two months, Boone County Schools saved $155 in fuel costs.
Tony DeNicola, a radio and TV engineer for Clear Channel Communications in Franklin, NJ, is another satisfied InterCharger user. His daily commute averages 130 miles daily between Edison, NJ and Franklin.
“It’s great with the price of gas,” said DeNicola, who has it installed on his 1994 Ford XLT Ranger, which has clocked in at about 160,000 miles on its odometer.
“I don’t have the pinging, the gas you buy today is garbage, and with the InterCharger, I step on the gas, and it has taken off with more power, strength, performance, and without hesitation,” DeNicola continued. He noted a three to four mile per gallon increase.
Typically changing the oil in his truck at 3,000 miles, DeNicola saw the oil was still clean. He held out until 4,000 miles, and saw the oil continued to remain clean. At 5.000 miles, although the oil was still clean, DeNicola changed his oil.
“It reburns stuff that is normally wasted, and cleans the engine,” DeNicola explained.
What also impressed him is when he ran his vehicle through inspection, and the inspector told him he had no emissions, and suggested there could have been an equipment malfunction, and performed several retests, with the same results.
“It’s a wonderful product, I recommend it,” DeNicola said.
Extreme Kleaner is another product offered by Extreme Energy Solutions. The Kleaner is biodegradable and non-toxic, and is all-purpose. It cleans up dirt, grease, and grime, with minimal environmental impact. It sells for $7.95 plus shipping, handling, and taxes for a 32- ounce bottle, and is also available in one and five gallon containers.
Deborah Levine, a sustainability professional, is impressed with what Extreme Energy Solutions has to offer, especially the InterCharger.
“The world has a problem, innovation will be a key, we have existing things in place,” she said. “It’s [InterCharger] here, it’s now, it reduces pollution, and can be utilized on existing vehicles at a reasonable cost.”
Levine said the InterCharger is an existing one-of-a-kind item, and is especially pleased it is made in the United States.
“It’s an existing proven piece of equipment, affordable for people, and pretty exciting for fleets,” Levine added.
Levine, who knows Burlum, said, “I believe he [Burlum] is truly trying to make a difference, and is a strong believer in a healthy United States.”
